As part of the coronation celebrations at Abbotsleigh Care Home, we entered a Nellsar-wide competition to design and make an eye-catching coronation crown.
Heading up the competition, Nellsar’s Recreation and Well-Being Manager Viv Stead commented: “The idea was to involve our residents in making something beautiful and memorable to display in their Home or garden that could be enjoyed by everyone for the coronation.”
Our competition entry started with a discussion with our residents about the shape and we decided to keep it traditional, but with some added extras. The template was started off by Resident Liaison Kirsty who made the shape using boxes and Stanley knife. Our residents then gave it a couple of undercoats of white, then two of gold! You can never have enough gold when it comes to a crown! Later, we had tea and biscuits in the garden, where we bedazzled our crown! Our ladies decided it needed some extra touches, so we found some photos of the king throughout the years and added those to the sides.
We are delighted to announce that our wonderful crown was awarded SECOND PLACE in the competition and we are thrilled to have won £200 for our residents’ fund.
The judges commented: ‘A beautiful crown decorated with colourful gems and pictures of the king throughout his life – an idea from two lady residents. Great memories!’
Huge congratulations to everyone involved in creating it for the competition. We couldn’t be more proud of our crown!
Check out the winning entries and all the runners up!
